CPH Mothership

X-Urban Studio, IAAC

This project is a critique and an invitation to rethink how a future city-expansion such as Copenhagen's island "Lynetteholm" can be thought. Rem Koolhaas coined the term BIGNESS in 1995 to describe a scale in which the project exceeds architecture itself as the conception of a single building.

From this idea, we intend to radicalize the separation between the envelope and the organs of the project, proposing a multi-scalar system that acts as a system of systems, a "Mothership" of sorts, blurring the edges of the individual and the collective.

Its modules come from three experimental precedent projects that challenge the vertical typology of the skyscraper. Thus, this counter proposal to Lynetteholm does not pretend to offer a better alternative nor to describe a dystopian future scenario. It dwells in-between these two poles, focusing on creating a new fertile ground for the design of future cities through the radicalization of typology.

Method For the module connections we used the Monoceros plugin for Grasshopper by Sub.Digital. This way we could define the connections between buildings that we wanted and try different combinations.
